| December 19, 2016

Window cleaning in Toronto, Ontario may not be an enjoyable chore, especially in winter. But, the routine maintenance will keep your windows working and looking like new for many years to come. Fortunately, you do not have to risk life and limb when it comes time to clean your vinyl windows. When you choose Magic we offer windows that can tilt or rotate inward. That way you can quickly wash every surface of your glass from inside your home. Here are the steps to follow. With these simple tips, you can clean your windows like the pros and keep them looking their best, year round.

Tools for the Job

To clean your vinyl windows like a pro you will need:

•    Gloves

•    Two buckets

•    Mild detergent

•    Sponge

•    Microfiber towels

•    Window cleaning solution

•    Spray bottle

•    Lint free cloths or paper towels

•    Plastic putty knife

•    Soft bristle brush

•    Vacuum

•    Silicone based lubricant

Step 1. Examine Your Vinyl Windows

Before you clean your window, first pull back the blinds and drapes and inspect it from corner to corner. Look for signs of air or water leaks that might require your attention. Accumulation of dirt in a certain area of the window could be your first sign. Also look for cracks, breaks, or warping. Look for any signs your vinyl windows might need repair or replacement.

Step 2. Mix Your Cleaning Solutions

Pull on your gloves and fill one bucket with clean, warm water. In the other bucket use some of your gentle detergent (one with water soluble surfactants) and mix it with warm water. On vinyl windows never use cleaners that contain solvents or petroleum ethers. These could warp, induce cracks, or discolor your vinyl. Also, if you don’t have any glass cleaner handy you can mix water and vinegar in a spray bottle. You should use a solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water.

Step 3. Clean the Frame

Wash your frame with a sponge using the detergent mixture. For tougher dirt, you can use the soft bristle brush. Rinse the cloth and wipe the surface again with clear water. Immediately dry with a soft towel. Do not let water rest on the surface, or it could collect inside the frame.

Step 4. Clean the Glass

Using the spray bottle and lint-free cloths, now clean the glass. Spray the cleaner around the surface and immediately wipe it away. Do not let it run down the window and collect at the bottom. For streak free glass you should wipe in different directions. Also, you can try using newspaper to wipe the glass clean. Do not use razor blades or abrasives on the glass surfaces of your vinyl windows. These might scratch the coatings or damage your window panes.

Step 5. Clear the Tracks

Next, you can vacuum the track and use the plastic putty knife to loosen debris and dirt. You can also use a dry soft bristle brush. Once the dirt is clear, use a dry towel to wipe down the track. Then lubricate by spraying the silicone lubricant on a cloth and applying it to the track. This will keep your vinyl window operating smoothly and soundlessly.
